It is the expressive intention, the fictionalizing of actuality for the aim of giving an idea within the artist’s mind a concrete actuality, that makes these abstractions match messengers for art. The most profound and universal of human emotions which may be timeless, and will have occurred in the ancient previous and will be experienced once more in the distant future.

While Densatil figures are predominantly well rounded, flamboyantly modelled and richly embellished with jewel settings, this group follows a quite totally different aesthetic with emphasis on athletic posture, clean strains and relatively restrained jewel adornments. The courtyard of the Kachabeshwarar temple is a wide-open house with shrines arranged round its periphery, except for the Ganesha shrine which is standing free within the open house by the facet of the temple tank. At the northern corners of this North-facing mandapa we find two distinctive artifacts standing lost in area, looking back seemingly forgotten in plain sight. These two remainders of pillars are, on the one hand clearly Indian of their inventive vocabulary, but then again they don’t slot in with any of the classes normally utilized to categorise South Indian art.
